Welcome to the Research Focus

Data-Driven, Smart & Secure Systems

AI

In our information society, the effective and efficient use of data is an indispensable and ubiquitous requirement in every area of life. Data-driven systems play an increasingly central role in the acquisition, management and preparation of information.

These approaches support people, organisations and companies through ICT-based, networked, secure and intelligent services in meeting important basic needs such as health, mobility and the design of living space, and at the same time act as an innovation driver for the Austrian economy.

The interdisciplinary research focus “Data-Driven, Smart & Secure Systems” develops future-oriented concepts, technologies and services in the Lead-Topics "eHealth", "Interoperable Systems", "Smart City & Smart Mobility", "Cyber Security" and "Artificial Intelligence in Applications" and makes them available for embedding in organizational and social ecosystems.

A major challenge is to integrate the currently heterogeneous systems via interoperable interfaces based on international standards. Similarly, more innovative measuring instruments and sensors must be integrated on the way to the "Internet of Things". Mobile devices and applications as well as virtual/augmented reality solutions play an essential role as interfaces to the users, therefore "human factors" and usability provide substantial contributions. Diverse sources of information, e.g. on environmental factors, and the use of existing databases (e.g. Open Data) interact to create holistic concepts (e.g. Smart Cities), in the context of which additional knowledge and smart/intelligent systems are created through data integration, data analysis and predictive analytics.

In this environment, cyber security requirements are essential basics for handling critical and sensitive data. This applies not only to the key issues of eHealth, Smart Mobility & Smart City, but also to the security of critical information infrastructures in general.

In the Lead-Topics of the research focus "Data-Driven, Smart & Secure Systems", the competences of various fields of expertise are used in an interdisciplinary way to be applied in several projects.
